FYR Macedonia: MRT confirms preliminary participation in Eurovision 2016

MRT, the national broadcaster of FYR Macedonia has confirmed to ESCToday that FYR Macedonia has applied to participate at the forthcoming 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm in Stockholm. Thus the country confirms its preliminary participation in Sweden come May. An official and final confirmation is yet to be made by the broadcaster.

FYR Macedonia is the 33rd country to confirm its intention to join the Eurovision bandwagon next year when the Eurovision extravaganza travels to Stockholm.

The period for countries to apply for participation at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest concluded on 15 September. Hereafter applicant countries have a grace period until 10 October to decide if they are to stay or not in the competition without facing a financial penalty.

The mechanism MRT will use to select FYR Macedonia’s Eurovision entry is yet to be determined. More information and details will be released in due course.

In 2015 FYR Macedonia selected its Eurovision act and entry via the traditional Scopje Song Festival. Daniel Kajmakoski was awarded the golden ticket to Vienna and represented the country with his entry Autumn leaves. Despite a great performance he failed to qualify to the grand final.

FYR Macedonia debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998 and is yet to win the event. The country’s best result in the competition was achieved in 2006, when it placed 12th in Athens.

The 2016 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to be held on 10, 12 ,14 May at the Globen Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
